A Therapeutic Approach to Coaching

If you want to change then THERE IS ONLY ONE QUESTION: Is what I am doing now taking me closer or further away from my ultimate goal?

Exclusively private ‘clinic’ style sessions are available on a Monday and Friday with appointments at 8.30am, 10.30am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm

Behavioural Change Coaching is not a medical intervention but is an appropriate choice for anyone with a non-clinical issue that is creating a problem:

Stress & Overwhelm

Example feelings include:

  • Not coping

  • Losing control

  • Being 'drained'

  • Being 'dragged down'

  • Generally dissatisfied

  • On edge

  • Self absorption

  • Desperation or despair

When you know what to do but can’t seem to find a way to make it happen. Typically issues around this will include but are not limited to: being tearful, overly upset without real cause, disrupted sleep patterns, lack of energy, distracted demeanour, tantrums and uncharacteristic aggression.

Lack of Direction

Example feelings include:

  • Suppressed anger

  • Frustration

  • Confusion

  • Isolation

  • Self loathing

  • Numbness

  • High highs and low lows

  • Jumping from one thing to another

  • Uncertainty

  • Instability

Typically this may or may not include feelings normally attributed to depression but will result in being generally dissatisfied with life. Feelings of low self-worth, lack of confidence or certainty, isolation and / or diminished self-belief are examples of the kinds of symptoms that are presented regularly.

Off-the-rails Teenagers

Example feelings include: (in the teenager)

  • Fear

  • Invincibility

  • Isolation

  • Superiority

  • Being misunderstood

  • Being misrepresented

  • Being hassled

  • Unfairly treated

There is no definitive list of symptoms for this one – please remember that we are dealing only with non-clinical issues, so if it’s extended drug abuse then we shouldn’t be your first port of call but if it’s drug worries then we probably are. Apparent inexplicable shifts in personality, aggression, anger, irritability, unreasonableness, poor academic results and self destructive behaviour are all typical issues that present in the clinic situation.

Disordered Lifestyles

Example feelings include:

  • Letting yourself down

  • Underachieving

  • Being misunderstood

  • Loneliness

  • Isolation

  • Fear

  • Not being good enough

  • Worthlessness

  • Lack of choice

Obsessions, damaging behaviour, harmful activities and fear of not being able to cope are indications of a disordered lifestyle and have the potential to be addressed with a behavioural change intervention.

Frequently asked questions about behavioural Change:

How often will I need to attend a session?

It depends on the issue we are dealing with. If it is something like an involuntary reaction to a specific stressful situation then it’s likely that it can be sorted out in a single session (or at least you’ll have enough tools to continue the work on your own).
If the issue is more complex and requires time to play a part in the process then you will need a series of sessions. An estimation of the time needed will be given at your first appointment.

Can you guarantee that I will be ‘fixed’?

There’s an old joke amongst psychologists that asks ‘How many Psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?’ The answer is as many as you like but the light bulb has to WANT to change. The same is true with any behavioural change. The difficulty is often that a person consciously wants to change but has some unconscious processing or activity that has prevented the change from happening. What we seek to do is guide you through tools and techniques that shift your emotional state in the very moment that the change decision is taken. What this does is allow you to make new choices and by doing so, to change your own behaviour.

Is there a refund if it doesn’t work?

You can be sure that all the tools and techniques that you’ll be guided through are tried and tested – not just by us, but are based on the best that we can find currently endorsed by coaching and psychological studies. They work – but we can’t guarantee that YOU will work – so there are no refunds. You pay for the time you spend with Martin and we hope you’ll act on what he suggests you do, that way you’ll increase your chances of getting the results you want.

Do you hypnotise clients?

Martin does utilise a range of therapeutic interventions and is likely in many instances to use relaxation and guided visualisation (or hypnosis if you prefer). The use of specific language within this guided visualisation is often described as clinical hypnosis because it generally supports positive behavioural changes at a conscious and unconscious level in the client.

Will it help me quit smoking or overeating or binge drinking?

If those are behaviours you want to change then we will work with you to remove them from your daily routines and replace them with behaviours that support the kind of life you wish to lead and help you toward being the kind of person you aspire to become.
